TEMBÉ

ART TEMBÉ is an art form that appeared in the middle of the 19th century in the region of the Guianas in South America, known today as Surinam and French Guiana.

​This geometric composition is an artistic expression realized in the form of painting, sculpture, and fashion by self-taught artists of the peoples of the Maroni River Valley located on the border of Suriname and French Guiana.

Many of them succeeded in escaping the plantations and found refuge in the depths of the Amazonian forest. “Le Marronnage” (the escape from slavery) led to the birth of an art form called Tembé. With the help of the Native Indians, who shared the forest with them and also inspired their artwork, the Maroons created art that described their lifestyle, values, and philosophy and soon became the sole decoration of their houses and domestic items. 

Some define Tembé as being the composite of two words: “Ten” which means “Time” and “Membe” which means “Conscious”. Characters and colors have meaning. They represent a visual language used to express proverbs, or morals, or deliver an intimate message to someone.

Filled with positive messages, Tembé enabled the Maroons to survive and pushed their will to rebuild their minds and communities and preserve their culture, lifestyle, values, and traditional practices. It stands as a symbol of resilience to overcome life challenges and find your way home.
